Local news for the week ending 27 November 2009:

SMOKING BAN TO BE EXTENDED
Health minister Mars di Bartolomeo says he’s considering extending the national smoking ban from restaurants to include bars and discos also. He said the government wanted to afford better protection to non-smokers who worked there. Mr Bartolomeo said the legislation would be brought into force next year and that objections would be ignored. He added that since a smoking ban in restaurants and workplaces was introduced in 2004, the number of smokers in the country had declined.

Interiors in violet

Both Will and I have always loved houseplants. One of the hardest parts about moving to Europe was finding homes for the 50+ plants we had in the US. Thanks to friends and family, all our plants eventually found loving homes and most are doing well in their adopted environments. In Ireland, we had few indoor plants due to the lighting situation of the apartment. Still, we left behind a couple of children for our friends there.

Our apartment in Luxembourg, on the other hand, is a houseplant’s dream: lots of sun, space to grow and fresh breezes off the balcony. (more…)

SWISS HOOLIGANS

Two Swiss football fans were arrested for rowdy behavior following their teams 3-0 win over the Grand Duchy on Saturday night. Police came across them staggering around the Rives de Clausen area yelling and threatening various doormen at the bars and clubs. Both refused to calm down and leave the area, so police had no option but to take them to the station and lock them up for the night. Other than this, police say the night passed off quietly.

TRAFFIC CHAOS

An accident involving a lorry caused chaos during yesterday evening’s rush hour. The truck tipped over in the Howald tunnel at half past four, resulting in a 6 kilometer traffic jam on the A1 in the direction of the capital from the east. (more…)

It’s All the Finale, for National Day

Hamm Stock Car FloatLast night, we attended the pre-event festivities for National Day. By my early analysis, it would seem that the pre-event activities are the best part of the holiday. We walked from our apartment down into the city center just before dusk — about 9pm, after we had dinner. The streets were packed with both with families and young adults, with everyone in high spirits. There were lots of tents with food, beer, wine and cocktails, and every restaurant was open with lots of outdoor seating.

The torch-light parade began at 10 and it was enthralling. The torches were like swords that burned from the top down. They were held by almost all the parade participants, including very young children. (more…)

To a new country, to find new adventures

The staff had some fun on the first of this month, but our move to Luxembourg is no April Fool.

My work will take us from Dublin to Luxembourg City later this year. We will take the Bakker Bugle with us, and our beloved readers, of course. We’re excited about the move and, in the next month or two, we’ll find out more about where and when we’ll take up residence.

Will and I will be learning a new city and new languages. You’ll read about our adventures at our new home and all over Europe. Plus, the BBB&B will be open and accepting reservations as soon as possible.

This change is no fault of Ireland, of course. We have a long list of things we love about this island and its inhabitants, and an even longer list of things we’d like to do before we go. It is simply time to take new opportunities elsewhere. Thank you, Ireland, for your hospitality, for your good graces, and for letting us be part of this exciting place.

And thank you, dear friends, for being our patient audience for the past two years. Your support means the world to us. We are so glad that we can take you with us!

Multi-phasic media promotion

It seems that the movie promotions industry has become ever more sophisticated in their cross-product campaigns. When the crack Bugle Procurement Squad returned from a sortie to the local supermarket in late January, I was stunned to discover the following promotional cookie.
