I started listening to NPR’s Planet Money podcast to understand why The Reserve money market fund broke the buck...

I started listening to NPR’s Planet Money podcast to understand why The Reserve money market fund broke the buck. I’d read several recommendations for the Planet Money’s analysis, but the financial crisis didn’t shock me until a major money market fund failed to meet my lowest expectations.

My second shock came when I heard a collaborative investigation by NPR and the New York Times that focused entirely on one link in the world’s economic mesh: between Kenosha and Dublin. The story was compelling and illuminating, aside from its personal relevance. It was also riveting to hear how millions of dollars (on paper) moved in 2007, along with me, from the northernmost suburbs of Chicago to the city of Dublin.

CAUTION: Check with your physician before listening to Planet Money and/or listening to and/or reading any in-depth analysis of the current financial crisis. If you have more than 30% of your net worth invested in stocks, bonds, or other financial instruments, you may experience the following symptoms: faintness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and/or post-nasal drip. If you experience any of those symptoms, contact your mommy, because your broker ain't gonna answer the phone. Use common sense and do not learn about financial markets when you are coping with a long commute, a misbehaving rugrat, or other distressing matters.

Here’s a short summary: Several school boards in southern Wisconsin bought complex financial instruments from uninformed agents who assured them that the financial deals were relatively risk-free. Those school boards invested with Depfa Bank, a rapidly expanding entity which recently moved from Germany to Ireland for the tax advantage.

Depfa and the Wisconsin school boards were each liable, in different ways, to cover corporate bonds if they lost a great deal of value. That just wasn’t supposed to happen, according to the school boards’ advisors and Depfa’s business model. A huge German bank, Hypo Real Estate bought Depfa just before it did. Now the German government is wondering whether Hypo is “too big to fail” as Depfa drags it down. And Wisconsin school boards have much, much less expertise to draw on as they contemplate the future.

I recommend Planet Money’s podcast as a way of getting your mind around the enormity of this financial crisis. Here are two links to get you started. The first is to the page where you can download the podcast or listen to it online. The second is to one of the companion pieces in the New York Times.

Planet Money: A Tale of Intertwined Misery

NYT: From Midwest to M.T.A., Pain From Global Gamble

There are links from each of those two pages to even more articles and audio broadcasts, if you really want to hear the gory details. As for myself, all I can offer are some photos of the Depfa offices in Dublin. (Apparently, neither news organization had the wherewithal to hire a photographer here.) They are what you’d expect from a company that exists mostly on paper.

The Depfa Building sits atop a parking garage, the darker structure in the foreground. The offices have a spectacular view (at least until the buildings to the east are complete). Short-term thinking, right?

Hypo Real Estate lists this building as its official address, but there are no signs mentioning the company. The men in the lobby didn’t look inviting, and I wasn’t in a Bugle P.I. kind of mood.

The day Obama was elected president, a friend called to say, “It’s safe to come back now!” I’m not so sure. Then again, when it comes to high finance, there’s no place to hide.

We saw a lot of central Rome on October 27th, so there are two sets of photos on Flickr for that day.

During the morning, we visited the Pantheon and a variety of churches. Take a look at our photos for the morning of the 27th.

In the afternoon, we walked through Rome’s Jewish Ghetto and the Trastavere area on the other side of the Tiber River. As evening approached, we had a scare, but you’ll have to get through the entire set to see it! See our set of photos for the afternoon of the 27th.

In other news about ancient Rome, a consortium of research institutions recently completed a wonderful simulation of what the Roman Forum would have looked like in its day. There’s even a sophisticated add-on for Google Earth. If you’re not familiar with that application, Spiegel Online published a series of screenshots for your enjoyment. You’ve seen our pictures of the ruins, now see the originals!

Finally, we’d be remiss without supplying a preview of our photos from October 27th. Here you go…

There are many things that I love about living in Ireland. There are a few things that annoy or trouble me...

There are many things that I love about living in Ireland. There are a few things that annoy or trouble me. But there is one thing that I clearly hate — the fact that butter comes in a single chunk of butter — 454 grams, to be precise. Why is it 454 grams, you ask? Because that is as close to one pound of butter as you can get in metric terms.

I could deal with a big block of butter if only there were measurements on the wrapping.

The wonder that is American butter comes in a package of four sticks to a pound, with tablespoons and other measurements clearly marked on the wrapping. Irish butter, by contrast, arrives unadorned. It comes in the same kind of waxed-paper wrapping as American butter, but no useful scales or handy particulars mar its gleaming gold packaging.

A poor cook is left to either (1) guess or (2) calmly force the butter into a measuring cup, making sure that all the air pockets are gone.

You may have noticed, by my tone, that this drives me crazy. As many of you know, I love to bake. But between the tiny oven and the butter, I’ve been driven to distraction.

So, for all those American cooks out there, preparing for their Thanksgiving feast, please take a moment to appreciate the lowly American stick of butter. Pause for a moment and reflect that if you need six tablespoons, it is easy as can be. Take heart that American ingenuity has again triumphed over old-world “complacency”. Love your butter and give thanks for its genius - it’s the best there is.

Well… American butter’s taste may not be that great, but it’s darn easy to measure!

The Bakker Bugle is proud to announce another contest for its beloved readers!

BuglePoints™ for your captions!..

The Bakker Bugle is proud to announce another contest for its beloved readers!

BuglePoints™ for your captions!

For the next few weeks, you can earn BuglePoints™ by making up funny, wry, tendentious, or otherwise pleasing captions for the photos that the Bugle staff post in special CaptionPosts™. Be sure to include your name with your caption, so we can award you the BuglePoints™ you’ve earned!

A few days after a CaptionPost™ appears, the Bugle staff will add its own comment to that CaptionPost™, letting each of you know how many BuglePoints™ you’ve earned on that CaptionPost™.

If you’re looking for an example, check out the Coming Soon: foto di Roma post. Although some people have earned points already, you’re welcome to add your own captions and get your BuglePoints™ total started!

The goal

Earn 1000 BuglePoints™ to receive The Very Special Prize. Bugle staff will award BuglePoints™ to those who post comments that contain captions. The awarded BuglePoints™ will appear as comments in the respective blog-posts. Bugle staff will also keep the official total for each commenter and occasionally post these totals. Those who reach the goal must send an email address to editor a t bakkerbugle.com to receive The Very Special Prize.

BuglePoints™ will be awarded according to the whims of the Bugle staff. The Bugle staff may not deduct BuglePoints™, so you always keep the BuglePoints™ you earn — although the small print below takes legal precedence, as always. There’s no limit on the number of winners, so it’s a good idea to cooperate with your fellow readers!

The prize

Unlimited access to the Bugle’s Private Exhibition of Holiday Photos. Warning: The Private Exhibition contains exclusive photos of sites and scenes that may be inappropriate for younger audiences, and are certainly NSFW. If that doesn’t sell you on the prize, I don’t know what will.

Additional Rules:

You may comment with multiple captions, or add captions after your first comment. You may or may not receive additional BuglePoints™ for those captions. In most cases, you will receive BuglePoints™ for the best caption that you comment on a given image.

You can also earn BuglePoints™ by nominating images for the contest. Nominated images must be drawn from the Bugle’s flickr photos.

The fine print:

Only the beautiful people can participate

Staff of the Bakker Bugle and all direct competitors in the B&B-and-Blog-and-Courier market, and each of their affiliates, subsidiaries, sales representatives are not eligible to participate. The immediate families (spouse, child, parents, siblings and their spouses) of the aforementioned persons are eligible to participate, because we make the rules, dammit.

In addition, individuals in any country, or any national or resident thereof, that the Irish Government determines from time to time is a country to which export, re-export, diverting, transfer or disclosure of any goods is restricted directly or indirectly without obtaining the prior written authorization of the applicable Irish Government agency, are not eligible to participate in this hokey little contest. We suspect these individuals have better things to do anyway..

This contest is open to individuals worldwide; however, the contest is void where prohibited or otherwise restricted by law, and we feel very sorry for you if your locality bans something as mind-bendingly fun as this. Participants are responsible for complying with all laws and regulations of their country, province, or state in connection with their participation in this contest. Participants must be the legal age of majority in their country, province or state of legal residence at the time of Contest entry and must be legal residents of such country, province, or state. After all, even ancient Roman wing-wangs sculpted in marble are wing-wangs nonetheless.

Winners don’t win everything!

Winners may be required to affirm their eligibility and compliance with these rules and regulations. By submitting each entry, each entrant agrees to and is deemed to have accepted all of the terms, conditions, and regulations contained herein. No cash equivalents are permitted. Prizes may not be redeemed, exchanged or otherwise substituted. PRIZES ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE.

By participating, you agree:
· to be bound by these Rules and the decisions of the Bugle staff (or their designated representative), which are final and binding in all respects and to waive any right to claim ambiguity with the Rules;
· to waive any right to claim ambiguity with these Rules;
· to indemnify and hold harmless the Bugle from any and all liability resulting or arising from the Contest;
· to release all right to bring a claim, action, or proceeding against the Bugle;
· to acknowledge that Bugle has neither made nor is in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relating to any prize and does not warrant, guarantee or in any way assure, vouch for or underwrite the work or any product associated with a prize including, but not limited to, merchantability, material, manufacture, workmanship, design, fitness for any particular purpose, value, condition, operation or performance;
· that the Bugle shall have no responsibility or liability in connection with disputes over procedures or with respect to use of any prizes (including property loss, damage, personal injury, or death — DEATH!!!);
· that any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with this Contest will be ineligible for prizes and may be prosecuted to the full extent of the Irish law, which is to say a stern talking-to;
· that Bugle is not responsible for multiple entries, entries that are entered by other than human means or by other mechanical means or for entries that are late (including delayed data transmissions), tampered with, illegible, mutilated, forged, mechanically duplicated, mass machine printed, postage due, misdirected, incomplete, destroyed, lost, photocopied entries or entries otherwise not in compliance with these Rules and such entries will be disqualified;
· that if, for any reason, the online portion of the Contest is not capable of running as originally planned, such as tampering or infection by computer virus, the Bugle at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel, modify, or suspend the Internet portion of the Contest and conduct any or all processes from all salvageable eligible entries received;
· that the Bugle is not responsible or liable for any injury or damage to an entrant’s or third person’s computer and/or its contents, related to or resulting from any part of this Contest; and
· that in no event shall Bugle be liable for any special, incidental or consequential damages associated with the Contest.

Prizes are awarded “as-is” without warranty of any kind from Bugle, express or implied. Any potential winner who does not claim the prize within 15 days of attempted first notification will forfeit his/her prize. Potential prize winner(s) may be required to sign and return an Affidavit or Declaration of Eligibility/Liability & Publicity Release within 30 days following the date of first attempted notification. Failure to comply within this time period may result in disqualification.

In the event a winner/potential winner’s employer has a policy that prohibits the awarding of a prize to an employee, the prize will be forfeited. Yes, your employer can interfere in something as trivial as this. We’re a capitalist society, dontcha know?

We make the rules — did we mention that before?

Submission of entry into this contest deems that participants agree to be bound by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of Bugle staff, no matter how egregious, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this contest.

Decisions of Bugle staff with respect to this Contest shall be final in all regards. The Bugle reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to change, alter and/or modify these rules at any time, including the substitution of a prize of equal, greater, or lesser value. Such change, alteration and/or modification shall become effective upon the decision of the same by Bugle, and no indication of this change is owed to the participants.

The Bugle reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend this contest for any reason in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion, including Will’s inability to complete projects. In case of a dispute over the identity of the entrant who submitted a selected Internet entry (if applicable), the Bugle reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to deem anyone it likes to be the official participant, including pets, houses, and alien lifeforms.

Participants certify and warrant that their submission is original and that they are the sole and exclusive owner and right holder of the submission and that they have the right to submit the submission in the contest. Each participant agrees not to submit any submission that (1) infringes any third party proprietary, intellectual property, industrial property, personal rights or other rights, including without limitation, copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or confidentiality obligation or (2) otherwise violates applicable law in any countries in the world, including the crazy laws in failed states. Beyond the maximum extent permitted by law, each participant shall indemnify, agree to keep indemnified, and hold the Bugle its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, agents, directors, officers, employees, and representatives and assigns harmless at all times from and against any liability, claims, demands, losses, damages, costs and expenses resulting from any act, default or omission of the participant or a breach of any warranty set forth herein. Further, to the maximum extent permitted by law and beyond, each participant shall indemnify, agree to keep indemnified, and hold the Bugle, its parent, subsidiaries, agents, directors, officers, employees, and representatives and assigns harmless at all times from and against any liability, actions, claims, demands, losses, damages, costs and expenses for or in respect of which the Sponsor will or may become liable by reason of or related or incidental to any act, default or omission by a participant under these Official Rules including without limitation resulting from or in relation to any breach, non-observance, act or omission whether negligent or otherwise, pursuant to these Official Rules by a participant.

Any false information provided within the context of the contest by any participant concerning identity, postal address, telephone number, marital status, number of offspring and pets, net worth, gross income, sexual orientation, favorite colour, ownership of right or non-compliance with these Official Rules or the like may result in the immediate elimination of the participant from the contest. The Bugle further reserves the right to disqualify any submission that it believes in its sole discretion infringes upon or violates the rights of any third party or otherwise does not comply with these Official Rules.

If for any reason the contest is compromised due to causes including infection by computer virus, defects, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this contest, to the extent that this contest has any fairness or integrity, the Bugle reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. The Bugle further reserves the right to disqualify any individual who tampers with the submission process. Any attempt by an individual to deliberately damage any website or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, the Bugle reserves the right to seek damages from any such individual to the fullest extent of the law.

A participant may be prohibited from participating in this contest if, in the Bugle’s sole discretion, it reasonably believes that the participant has attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of this contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices or annoys, abuses, threatens or harasses any other participants, the Sponsor, the judges, or associated agencies.

Ours, it’s all our ours, mwah ha ha ha ha!

The Bugle has the right to modify, use in perpetuity on any media, assign to any third parties and or dispose of entries. Once submitted, entries become the sole property of the Bugle and will not be returned. By participating in this Contest, you grant Bugle and its designees permission to use your name, picture, likeness, biographical information, statements, address (city and state) and/or voice in any manner for any marketing, advertising or promotions, whether telecast, published, or used in other medium (including but not limited to posting on the web), and to maintain such name, picture, likeness and/or voice in a database for future use, all without additional remuneration, all to the fullest extent permitted by Irish law, which is to say not at all, but you just try navigating the Irish judiciary to stop us.

By submitting an entry, entrant gives permission (and warrants and represents that he/she has obtained all rights necessary to give such permission) to the Bugle to post his/her entry and entry information on any or all Tubes of the Interweb and any other media, and to otherwise use his/her entry and entry information in accordance with the requirements of this contest and Official Rules, and further warrants and represents that his/her entry does not violate any law or regulation, or right, of any third party, including but not limited to intellectual property rights, such as but not limited to, rights of copyright, trademark, or patent, or rights of publicity and/or privacy, and is not defamatory, slanderous or libellous, that entry is his/her own original work, the content is true and can be verified, has not been accepted for previous publication or submitted in any competition, and that he/she has followed these Official Rules.

By entering, entrant and entrant’s employer agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Bugle from any action or liability resulting from the publishing of his/her entry. The Bugle reserves the right in its sole discretion to decide if an entry is appropriate for judging, posting, or publication and may disqualify any entry at any time in the event it is determined, in the Bugle’s sole discretion that the entry is not appropriate, or, that the contestant has not complied with these Official Rules.

Entry and finalist materials will be deemed a Work Made For Hire under the copyright laws of Ireland, Iran, and all countries whose convention name begins with the letter “I” but if any winner’s entry and/or finalist materials cannot be so deemed, then that winner and winner’s employer agrees to irrevocably assign and transfer to Bugle all of his/her rights, title and interest in and to the materials, including all copyrights (including but not limited to renewal, derivative rights), in Iran and worldwide, for valuable consideration, the receipt and sufficiency of which is hereby acknowledged. Each winner hereby waives in favor of the Bugle, all rights of “Droit Moral” or “Moral Rights of Authors” or any similar rights or principles of law that the winner may now or later have in the entry and finalist materials.

The Bugle reserves the right to alter, change or modify any of the winning stated materials, indeed any of the submissions at all, in its sole discretion. Ha! Upon the request of Sponsor, each winner shall execute and deliver such additional instrument of assignment, in a form deemed necessary and as may be solely determined by Bugle. Evil LOL! The Bugles failure to request such an assignment shall not be deemed a waiver of the right to request the assignment at any time. Ha ha ha ha cough!

It’s not our fault, we didn’t do it! (And the Bugle-didn’t-do-it dancers.)

Neither the Bugle nor its agents and representatives shall be responsible for: any technical difficulties including, but not limited to lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, garbled phone calls, limited calling, dropped lines, busy phone lines, computer error or any technical malfunctions of the telephone network, illegible or mutilated correspondence, inability to access the contest via the Internet due to hardware, software compatibility, general idiocy, user error, or deliberate evil intent;or, the inability of the online portion of the contest to run as originally planned, including tampering or infection by computer virus. Sponsor at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel, modify, or suspend the Internet portion of the contest and conduct any or all drawings from all salvageable eligible entries received.

The Bugle is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the contest, or in the announcement of the prize.

The Bugle is not responsible for electronic transmission errors resulting in omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations, or transmission. The Bugle is not responsible for theft or destruction or unauthorized access to or alterations of Submission materials, or for technical, network, telephone equipment, electronic, computer, hardware or software malfunctions or limitations of any kind. The Bugle is not responsible for inaccurate transmissions of or failure to receive submissions by The Bugle on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site or any combination thereof.
Hi there, Bugle readers!

Hi there, Bugle readers!

For a long time, I’ve wanted an easy way to share tidbits of text, web links, and photos with you. I also didn’t want to crowd out the more substantial posts of the blog with such nonsense. I think I found the solution in a Tumblr feed, which you can now find in the sidebar to the right.

For several months, there’s been a “Recommended Reads” link in the sidebar of the blog — but that only handles bookmarks. I really want to share photos with you the day that they are taken, so you get some sense of the rhythm of life around here. The Tumblr service allows me to post all kinds of things in the sidebar. (If you want to retrieve one of the old bookmarks, go directly to the Bugle’s Ma.gnolia bookmarks page.)

So if you’re looking for more Bugle content, scroll past the perpetually popular weather report and the recent comments, and take a look at what’s new in our world. The photos you see are typically taken the same day they appear. If you want more information, or a better look at a photo, just click on the entry. As always, suggestions and comments are welcome.

Oh, and the Bugle staff are diligently working on the Official Rules for the caption contest. They had to call Legal to get everything sorted. Thank you for your entries in the meantime!

Through a FOIA request submitted this summer, it has come to the Bugle’s attention that all American tourists travelling to Europe received the following instructions:

From: North American Tourist Authority
To: US and Canadian Citizens bound for Europe
Date: [redacted]

Dear US and/or Canadian citizens bound for Europe,

Tourists from North America have always been drawn together by the sound of their non-British accents. For decades, the Standard Greeting among these travelers was, “Where are you from?” or “Where ya from?” or some variation thereof.

As of [redacted], 2008, the new Standard Greeting is “So, what about this election, huh?” Please use this Greeting when encountering any person with a non-British accents in Foreign Countries.

An image of the letter, as received by the Bugle in response to our FOIA request, is available in PDF form.

The Bugle already sent a letter to the President of NATA with the following message:

We respectfully request that American expatriates receive timely notice of any future changes in the Standard Greeting. NATA should be aware that expatriates with American accents may be disoriented when visiting tourist sites around Europe without having prepared a Suitable Response to a new Greeting.

That is all.

Last week, Ireland’s Government presented its budget for 2009 with the theme, “solidarity and patriotic action in most difficult and uncertain times.” The prevailing response to the the Fianna Fail party, in particular its Finance Minister Brian Lenihan, was that they chose the right tune but played too many notes off-key. To put it in terms from the US election: Lenihan used a hatchet rather than a scalpel.

The proposal that generated the loudest outcry was the introduction of means-testing for medical cards for those over 70 years old. For the past several years, persons over 70 received a card that entitled them to free health care. With budget deficits looming, the Government chose to limit spending on health care for the growing number of Irish people living a longer time. The proposal was a means-test which would eliminate free care for those able to pay their own way, thereby introducing a tiered system of benefits.

The specific extent of means testing was more than a small step away from universal health care — according to the Irish Independent, more than 50% seniors would not qualify for full coverage. The response was immediate outrage. A protest was called for this past Wednesday, to bring that outrage to the door of the Dail on Kildare Street, just a few blocks from our home.

I attended the protest. These elders know how to protest: an impressive mass of people (from all ages and walks of life)…

…fiery speeches from all parts of the political spectrum…

…and creative banners and picket signs.

The assembly was orderly but forceful. What I found most remarkable was the protesters’ common expectation that the demonstration would have a profound effect. One group discussed how the legislators’ response would “make or break their careers.” I have never been to a protest that exhibited such confidence — including other protests in Dublin.

The Government has already changed the details of the proposal, but the controversy continues hotting up. Disputes within the ruling coalition and the Fianna Fail party itself are more intense than any time since we moved to Dublin. The next few weeks will bring some political upheaval to Ireland after a quiet summer.

For more photos and descriptions of the event, take a look at my set of photos on Flickr.

And everybody talks about the American economy, but especially Americans.

All that is by way of introduction to two podcast episodes that I found fascinating and accurate in representing the mainstream of English-speaking European thought about the US.

An Open Source podcast episode, produced by Brown University (in the US), featuring Godfrey Hodgson from Oxford. Within the theme of Nixon’s campaign in 1968, Hodgson articulates a dominant, moderate, intellectual view of US politics from Ireland, the UK, and most of the Continent.

An episode of Everyday Ethics, a podcast from BBC Radio Ulster that is far broader than its title suggests. The episode contains three stories, and the first and third are interesting perspectives on current American issues. The first story is a panel discussion of the root causes of the international credit crisis. In the third story, the BBC’s North America editor “makes the case for giving America a second chance.” The second story is about near-death experiences. It’s nice enough, but not relevant to the theme of this post.

The Open House Dublin event last year was one of our best Dublin experiences. This weekend is the 2008 Open House event. We’re excited about it, and we’ll have lots of Dublin architecture to share next week!

In preparation, I had lunch at The Cake Café in the Daintree Building this week. It is a gorgeous oasis off my favorite busy street in Dublin, and an achievement in sustainable design, to boot. There were dozens of bicycles parked under an integrated shelter across from the restaurant part of the building, and young and old cyclists were continually coming and going — but not to the café. Maybe I’ll find out why on my next visit.

From the best word-a-day website, at wordsmith.org:

serein

PRONUNCIATION:
(suh-RAN [the second syllable is nasal])

MEANING:
noun: Fine rain falling from an apparently cloudless sky, typically observed after sunset.

ETYMOLOGY:
From French serein, from Old French serain (evening), from Latin serum (evening), from serus (late).

USAGE:
“She must have caught a chill from the serein, that’s all!” Raphael Confiant; Mamzelle Dragonfly; Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 2000.

Here in Dublin, I’ve observed serein during the morning, afternoon, and evening as well. I don’t know of any uniquely Irish slang for this type of rain, although there are lots of words and colloquial phrases for heavier rain.

There must be a word for serein, given how common it is here (and how uncommon it is everywhere else I’ve lived).

As the leaves start changing here in Dublin, another sure sign of the approaching winter arrived: the first “snowflake” in the car. The car has a nice feature - on the dashboard it tells you the outside temperature. Being that it is an Irish car, it reports the temperature in degrees Celsius. I have grown accustomed to that over the last year.

What I can’t grow accustomed to is the “snowflake” warning: when the temperature gets to about 5 degrees, I get a little snowflake next to the temperature reading. I assume this is to help me understand that it is cold, and that it could snow or there could be other cold related hazards on the road surface. In theory, that’s nice. However, I’m not sure I appreciate my car thinking I’m a moron.

Since I saw the snowflake last week, it’s been warmer in Dublin. I’ll try to remember to snap a picture the next time I see the warning. In the meantime, Will found a photo of a close cousin of my car’s dashboard on jiazi’s Flickr photos. Thanks, jiazi:

If you can’t wait to see the snowflake, here are two photos of something very close to what I see:

We drove the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland two weeks ago. We had gorgeous weather, and the coast itself was a marvel. We spent two days touring County Antrim (which is north-east of Belfast) and we have lots of photos to share, of course.

The photoset for Saturday, the first day of the trip, is now available for your entertainment. Go to the Flickr webpage for the day’s photos first. If you’d like to use the slideshow feature, click on the first photo (the upper-left corner of the grid) and start from there.

Anita worked hard on the comments, to give you a sense of our trip. We’ll work to make the second day’s photos available as soon as possible. What Anita didn’t mention was that we felt blessed by the extraordinary weather on Saturday: warm, continuous sun. Here’s a preview of the story of that day.

A complaint of Irish workers: “Supposedly Irish companies leave Irish workers to redundancies and hire cheap labour in the US.”

The Irish government, business groups, and labour unions spent the summer negotiating a new National Pay Agreement — a kind of super-contract for Irish workers. The negotiations were rough for a while, and labour news became important to the Irish papers. I noticed an interesting tidbit in two articles last week:

Trade unions are dismissing reports that Aer Lingus plans to use American crew members on its flights to and from the US. The airline is reportedly planning to recruit American crew members who would fly over and back to Ireland during a single shift. This would eliminate the need for Aer Lingus to put its Irish crew members up in hotel rooms overnight.

The IMPACT trade union insists the move would be illegal under health and safety legislation. Irish Congress of Trade Unions General Secretary and Aer Lingus board member David Begg has said the revelation could effect [sic] the talks. ‘Quite clearly it will be raised since it is such a major employer but the veracity of it will be another matter,’ he said.

This should be interesting — anyone want to take bets on how many times Bugle staff will have their flights cancelled?

By the way, the new national pay agreement was settled last week. The Bugle Staff might be able to figure out just what that means before the ratification process is finished in four to six weeks.
