New Coat Sunday!

From the title above, one might think that this will be an action-packed story about Anita or Will going to a Luxembourgish mall to purchase a coat (on a Sunday).

But it is so much more than that: We’re talking about an officially celebrated holiday in Luxembourg: Mantelsonndeg — roughly translated, “Coat Sunday”. (more…)

Interiors in violet

Both Will and I have always loved houseplants. One of the hardest parts about moving to Europe was finding homes for the 50+ plants we had in the US. Thanks to friends and family, all our plants eventually found loving homes and most are doing well in their adopted environments. In Ireland, we had few indoor plants due to the lighting situation of the apartment. Still, we left behind a couple of children for our friends there.

Our apartment in Luxembourg, on the other hand, is a houseplant’s dream: lots of sun, space to grow and fresh breezes off the balcony. (more…)

SWISS HOOLIGANS

Two Swiss football fans were arrested for rowdy behavior following their teams 3-0 win over the Grand Duchy on Saturday night. Police came across them staggering around the Rives de Clausen area yelling and threatening various doormen at the bars and clubs. Both refused to calm down and leave the area, so police had no option but to take them to the station and lock them up for the night. Other than this, police say the night passed off quietly.

TRAFFIC CHAOS

An accident involving a lorry caused chaos during yesterday evening’s rush hour. The truck tipped over in the Howald tunnel at half past four, resulting in a 6 kilometer traffic jam on the A1 in the direction of the capital from the east. (more…)

More news from our town, for your pleasure.

ROBBER DISARMED
A quick witted customer snatched a robber’s gun out of his hand during a raid on a drugstore in Mondorf yesterday. The robber threatened the shopworkers with the weapon and demanded the cash from the tills. He then fired a shot into the roof of the store for effect. It was at this point that the customer realised he was only carrying an air pistol and made a successful grab for it. The robber then fled empty handed on foot in the direction of the border with France. Police were unable to find him and have appealed for witnesses.
ON THE WRONG TRACK
Police prevented a serious accident in the early hours of yesterday morning on the railway line joining Bettembourg and Dudelange. They stopped a woman who was driving her car along the tracks after taking a wrong turning at a level crossing. (more…)

Bugle-Blog CLASSIC

The Bugle does not aspire to comprehensive coverage of anything in particular. So it’s not a revelation that we didn’t get around to all of our ideas for blog posts about Ireland. When we moved from our home in Dublin, we took with us a long list of experiences that we still want to share. (more…)

The tree behind our house

There’s a tree behind our apartment building. There’s a bench beneath it, a good place to sit away from the main traffic through the park. It’s a nice enough tree during the summer.

Nut Tree

About two weeks ago, we noticed people in the park stooped around the tree, occasionally picking something off the ground. By last week, families were coming to fill their sacks. (more…)

BBB&B Update: September shakedown

Please forgive the staff for their negligence of the blog these past few weeks. We had an Tour Eiffelimportant visit from the mother company to see whether the B&B is ready to open for business. The final report hasn’t been released yet, but the initial feedback was favorable. We’re sure that our new facilities in Luxembourg will meet the high expectations set by our Dublin operation.

The September dress rehearsal also brought the debut of a new series of Bugle products — guided tours. Our premier package is a whirlwind tour through a large part of France, an excursion that includes three wine regions and almost four days in and around Paris. (more…)

Luxembourg News Update: 18 Sept ’09

From the annals of local news, as brought to the attention of the Bugle staff by ARA City Radio, here is your probably-soon-to-be weekly Luxembourg update:

SAMURAI WARRIOR
Police arrested a man in Fennange, near Bettembourg with a samurai sword in his car. He was on his way back to a bar where he’d had an argument with another of the customers. He’d told the other man he would be back with his samurai sword to sort out the matter. But the police were able to stop him before he could get into the bar, and confiscated the sword. He also lost his driving license on the spot after failing a breath test.
FIGHTS NATIONWIDE
Police had to intervene in no fewer than 6 fights on Saturday night. (more…)

Preview: How big is Luxembourg?

The most enduring attraction of this blog appears to be one of our early posts, the one about the size of Ireland. (I suspect that it is particularly popular with young students looking to borrow some ideas for a school report.)

The Bugle staff are working on a sequel to that post, with the working title, Luxembourg: Put It in Your Pocket and Take It with You. Today, we offer you an early look at our contribution to the fascinating world of comparative geography. (more…)

The wine glass that ate Luxembourg

We knew that Ville-Haute was the premier shopping district in Luxembourg before we even visited the city. When we arrived, we learned that the shops would be open for a very special Sunday sale in June. That Sunday, Anita discovered the Villeroy & Boch store. It is, in her words, “a place of wonderful prettiness and stuff that I want.”

Today, we want to share her discovery on that day: the mostest wine glass ever. (more…)
