Kissy Puppy, Happy Games

Monday’s dinnertime can be a bit tedious. It’s been only ten hours since the weekend of shared experiences, so there isn’t much news to report. The whole work-week stretches out ahead, keeping one’s mind on business rather than one’s spouse. This Monday was blessed with the label on a discarded bottle of Coke.

Happy Games Kissy Puppy Happiness Factory

Anita and I sent a significant portion of our “together time” eating dinner and marveling at the Kissy Puppy. When we retreated to each of our designated corners of the apartment, I decided to follow up. (more…)

Readers’ affection for the next confection

The BB Procurement Department has license to obtain unique or representative confections during the course of ordinary operations. Those purchases are given asset tags, categorized according to several key taxonomies, and then placed in environmentally-controlled storage. At some point, this inventory of neat stuff is meant to be used for future blog posts.

The move to Luxembourg created an opportunity for a review of our sugar-related resources and associated goods. In short, we have some candy and other food left over from Ireland, and we need your help. (more…)

Luxembourg’s National Day

Luxembourg’s official celebration of National Day is solemn compared to the night before. The Grand Duke and his family attended a service and then reviewed the military and civil forces of his realm. (more…)

We arrived in Luxembourg

We arrived before our stuff — “on holiday” for official purposes. We drove into Luxembourg with several large suitcases in the back of our Skoda estate (i.e. station-wagon). The contents of the suitcases were an inexplicable combination of stuff that I thought might be useful, stuff I forgot to send with the movers, and stuff that Anita purchased or used in the US. A security official would be sorely confused by our traveling habits.

On the way, we passed an IKEA near the border with Belgium. IKEA would come to dominate the remainder of our weekend. Belgium: for us, land of blue skies and IKEA Almost as soon as we arrived at our new apartment, we dropped our airborne burden and drove to Belgium (15 minutes away) to seek a bed for our unfurnished apartment. If we failed, we would need to spend the night in a hotel and try again the next day. (more…)

I am a Dublin voter!

I almost missed the deadline to apply for the Register of Electors for Friday’s election. You can imagine my delight when I found my reminder card in the mail last week. It said that I should vote at the primary school on Lower Baggot Street. (more…)

Busy, busy — but time for art

Anita and I so busy that we’re just now watching the Eurovision 2009 broadcasts from last week. (Fantastacular! Glorilicious!) Mostly, we’re preparing for the big move to Luxembourg in three weeks.

Today, we completed a task 18 months in the making: we bought a lovely painting from one of the regular exhibitors on Sundays at Merrion Square. We’ve strolled around the park at midday on dozens of Sundays, knowing that we would leave Ireland with a souvenir someday. (more…)

Dracula in Dublin

I am all in a sea of wonders. I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul. God keep me, if only for the sake of those dear to me! …

Safety and the assurance of safety are things of the past. Whilst I live on here there is but one thing to hope for, that I may not go mad, if, indeed, I be not mad already. … For now, feeling as though my own brain were unhinged or as if the shock had come which must end in its undoing, I turn to my diary for repose. The habit of entering accurately must help to soothe me.

Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula, begins with a series of diary entries from the journal of one Jonathan Harker, who travelled to the Carpathian mountains to provide legal services for a certain Count Dracula. I humbly suggest that we follow him. (more…)
