We knew that Ville-Haute was the premier shopping district in Luxembourg before we even visited the city. When we arrived, we learned that the shops would be open for a very special Sunday sale in June. That Sunday, Anita discovered the Villeroy & Boch store. It is, in her words, “a place of wonderful prettiness and stuff that I want.”

My last lesson with my tutor was a review of body parts. She didn’t know the english word for «le foie». Here is the cross-cultural exchange to describe that particular human organ, translated from french. I’m sure you can guess what organ we were talking about:
Anita is becoming famous in some circles in Luxembourg for her French!
For months, she practiced one and only one phrase in French:
Je suis desolée. Je ne parle pas français.
What does it mean, in English? “I’m sorry. I don’t speak French.”

At the beginning of August, we took a three-day weekend to visit Colmar, in Alsace. The town was well-recommended, and we’d enjoyed the region when we passed through it for the Tour de France.

Although we did not secure a press pass for this year’s Tour de France, the Bugle sent a crack team of correspondents to Alsace to cover Stage 14 for our readers. Of course, we’re a bit late to report on minor details like the yellow-jersey standings and the action of the stage itself. Doesn’t matter: we specialize in human-interest stories anyhow.

Happy Bastille Day!
This holiday celebrates the customary event that marks beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, the storming of the Bastille prison (and temporary armory in July 1789). At that time, Luxembourg had been ruled for decades by the Austrian Hapsburgs, who had shown little interest in this part of their empire. (more…)
