Anita and I are excited about tonight’s matchup between the Republic of Ireland and France, in the second round of World Cup 2010 qualification. We’d like to help you catch up with the Irish team’s exploits this year. (more…)

Not finished with the Tour!
Consider this post a wrap-up of our Tour de France coverage for 2009. You’ve seen plenty of photos from our trip to Stage 14, but you haven’t seen the video. In this post, we’ll give you that, plus news about the response in Luxembourg to their favorite sons’ performances. (more…)

More Tour photos
You’re surely anxious to see the rest of our photos from Stage 14 of the Tour de France, on July 18th. We drove straight from Sundhoffen to Delle, to see the cyclists get ready for the toughest climb of the day. (more…)

Tour de France photos, with descriptions!
Although we did not secure a press pass for this year’s Tour de France, the Bugle sent a crack team of correspondents to Alsace to cover Stage 14 for our readers. Of course, we’re a bit late to report on minor details like the yellow-jersey standings and the action of the stage itself. Doesn’t matter: we specialize in human-interest stories anyhow.
As usual, we’ll direct you to photosets on Flickr, whose photos include amusing and informative descriptions. The following two sets will take you to Sundhoffen, just a kilometer or two after the start of Stage 14 in Colmar.

Breaking News: Ireland and Italy tie
Italy played Ireland tonight, in Southern Italy, for the World Cup qualifying round. Italy had won every match in the round so far.
Robbie Keane scored in the 85th minute to tie the match, an incredible result against the reigning world champions.
This is not an April Fool!

Ireland win Grand Slam in Six Nations
The year was 1948 when Ireland last won the Grand Slam of the Six Nations Championship. At this time yesterday, the frustrating era of not fulfilling Ireland’s hopes was almost as long as the Chicago Cubs’s absence from the World Series (i.e. baseball’s Two-Nations championship).
Yesterday, we were privileged to witness Ireland’s moment of rugby glory in our local pub, which was full of Irish fans who lived and died with every change of possession. (more…)

Donegal: first us, now the Rally
Last weekend, we toured the Donegal region of Ireland, the northwest corner of Ireland. (Highlighted in blue here; thanks to the creators on the Wikimedia Commons.)
It was quiet in Donegal; some B&Bs and a few tourist sites were closed until late spring. That befits the weather of Donegal, which is hardly welcoming for snowbirds. We had an outstanding weekend, in part due to the quiet season.
This weekend will not be quiet for that region, as the World Rally Championship kicks off today on some of the very same roads that Anita drove one week ago. (more…)

Olympic Summer Fun continues!
Here at the Bugle, the Olympic fun doesn’t stop just because the events in China came to a close!
The Bugle staff wants to know: Which Olympic events are the best preparation for the coming collapse of civilisation as we know it?
We’ve given you a few choices regarding the end of days, but what we really to see is your own ideas in the comments. Write a comment with the name of the event and the reason why that event’s greatest athletes will survive the post-apocalyptic wastelands. We’ll add it to the polls and you might just win the Post-Apocalyptic Prize*!

Olympic “Nations” — Who Decides? Part 1
Dave asked,
Great Britain enters a team into the Olympics, not the UK. So, I think that England, Wales, and Scotland play as one team. I think that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland also play as one team in the Olympics. In FIFA Soccer competitions, all of these “countries” enter their own teams. What’s going on?
Note that this is even weirder considering that Puerto Rico, a territory of the US, has it’s own team in the Olympics. I just don’t get it.
First, an introduction to the relevant parts of the Olympic Charter. (more…)

Olympics Coverage on RTE
Radio Telefís Éireann (RTE) is the Irish national broadcaster, and it is my source for the 2008 Olympics on television. Its coverage consists primarily of three programs: Olympics through the Night, Olympics AM, and Olympics Today. All three consist of live broadcasts as well as overviews and highlights. At any time from about midnight to 4pm, the Olympics is broadcast on one of RTE’s two television channels — but never both to this point.
I record all three programs every day, so I see all the events that RTE chooses to show — although I see many of them at 12x or 30x speed. RTE’s choices are shaped by the sports for which Irish athletes qualified and the events of (putative) Irish interest. These are quite different from what I remember of US coverage, but that should be no surprise.
Still, I am surprised by what I’ve seen. (more…)
