It was granted city status in the 8th Century. It was a prosperous trading town and joined the Hanseatic League in 1407. Here’s one way to consider its historical role: Amsterdam was established in the 13th Century and thrived, in part, due to trade with the more prominent Zwolle.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/kdk_0451.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Moat with De Peperbus\" width=\"500\" height=\"287\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1970\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/kdk_0451.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/kdk_0451-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nThe oldest part of Zwolle is bounded by a star-shaped moat, crowded with boats of all sizes. The moat connects to the typical Dutch canals surrounding the city, making the whole place feel like the ideal Dutch town.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP3023.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Moat Sunset\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1963\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP3023.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP3023-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nThe area inside the moat is crowded with pedestrian-only retail areas and historical sites. Lots of little shops to catch your eye, some outstanding restaurants, frequent markets, and lots of possibilities for people-watching.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6291.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Grote Markt\" width=\"500\" height=\"257\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1968\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6291.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6291-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_7754.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Market\" width=\"500\" height=\"296\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1964\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_7754.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_7754-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nThere’s an impressive number of long-standing buildings, with great stories attached to each one. We recommend “Footprints from a Distant Past” available in English from the VVV (which means Tourist Information bureau) attached to the Grote Kerk (which means Big Church, so you can’t miss it).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3686.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Grote Kerk\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3686.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_3686-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nZwolle’s apparently commonplace residential areas and suburbs are something special for us, too. The bicycle-road network is standard Dutch, with complex intersections that privilege bikes over cars (and over walkers). If you just tool around the outer parts of the city, you’ll see teenagers holding hands while they bike to school, families traveling in an amazing variety of work-bikes, and a host of little details that make Zwolle distinctive.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6673.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Bikes at intersection, near Sassenpoort\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1967\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6673.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_6673-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP2777.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Dutch puppy love\" width=\"500\" height=\"244\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1965\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP2777.jpg 500w, http:\/\/bakkerbugle.com\/apps\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMGP2777-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nAnd if you’re tired of people, it’s a short trip into the countryside.
